Myanmar's junta on Saturday (Jun 12) accused some of the country's two dozen ethnic armed groups of providing training to its opponents to carry ...

This handout photo from local media group Kachinwaves taken on May 18, 2021 shows a burning private fuel tanker truck following an attack by Kachin Independence Army ethnic rebels along a highway in Kutkai township in Shan State near the Myanmar and China border as clashes between the military and rebels continue.

Bomb attacks have become a daily occurrence as the army struggles to impose authority after seizing power from elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February. At a news conference, junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun identified three ethnic armed groups he said had provided training to"terrorists" - the Kachin Independence Army , the Karen National Union and the Karenni National Progressive Party - which has an armed wing.

Some of the ethnic armed groups, which have been fighting for decades for greater autonomy, had been in a shaky ceasefire. But that has frayed since the coup with some of the groups openly backing anti-junta protesters. Meanwhile, new armed groups have sprung up in parts of the country to oppose military rule.
