Lawyer Gloria James-Civetta confided that she now handles 12 to 18 cases a year of underage commercial sex after a steady rise of such cases over the years.

What is deplorable according to these practitioners is the fact that the internet seem to have made these illegal transactions effortless and easily concealed, thereby making it a highly under-reported crime.

Another lawyer, Mr Rajan Supramaniam, said he sees at least 10 cases a year through legal consultations. “Some of it is under-reported. That is the disturbing part. Unless they are being traced or there is a tip-off, they are not reported.” She added that many of these girls are goaded by the idea that being “nameless” or anonymous on the Internet makes it hard for anyone, even police authorities, to track their activities.Ms. Chan explained that “People responding to their ads and wanting to engage their sexual favours make them feel attractive and desired,” and she gave as example the case of an underage girl who seek men’s attention and rewarded them for their companionship.

According to Ms. Chan, that girl had at least eight partners during that period and would have sex with them and buy her whatever she wanted. “It soon became an addiction,” she said.Under the law, it is an offence to have sex with a minor under 16 and to have commercial sex with a person under 18. Having commercial sex with a minor carries a penalty of up to seven years in jail, a fine, or both.
