More deaths recently because Omicron caused many more infections: Experts

SINGAPORE - Omicron's mortality rate is lower than Delta's but the high number of cases in recent months has contributed to more deaths in Singapore, especially among the unvaccinated, experts said.But the country has recorded anotherProfessor Leo Yee Sin, executive director of the National Centre for Infectious Diseases said the denominator, or the number of people who were infected, is an important consideration.

Together with Omicron being more easily transmitted, many more people, including seniors who remain unvaccinated, were infected."Whether it's on oxygen, in intensive care units, or deaths, the unvaccinated, even though it's only 5 to 10 per cent of the population, was still more than 50 per cent of all the cases."

The third panellist, Professor Teo Yik Ying, dean of the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore, agreed that the current wave has been a problem for the unvaccinated.

Errr…I would think if Omicron causes many more infections, it would be more dangerous compared to Delta whose fatalities was always attributed to underlying medical conditions ? 🤔🤔
