It was 3am on Saturday, and I had been stuck in my car along the Federal Highway for six hours as flooding caused parts of the expressway to be shut.

There were thousands of vehicles stuck along the highway amid the heavy rains, some of them abandoned by their owners who decided to walk to higher ground.

I am not sure if this sounds like an exaggeration, but I am still trying to digest today about what had happened, especially after witnessing dead cats and dogs being swept away by strong currents, and seeing so many people displaced - all hungry and cold. In my car along the Federal Highway that Saturday night, the road was pitch black and there were no lights from shophouses as the authorities had switched off power supplies to the area to prevent electrocutions.

And yet, some of Malaysia's political leaders seemed tone-deaf, more interested in their meetings and walkabouts in floodwaters, instead of ensuring rescue boats reach deluged areas fast, and food and other aids are dispensed. At a time when many Malaysians are already disappointed with politicians for their incessant politicking, their slow response to the needs of flood victims have worsened their image.

What broke me was how a little girl and her mother had spent overnight holding onto a pole at a bus-stop amid rising waters, before they were finally rescued. Yes, that could have happened to me and my daughter.
