LILONGWE: Malawi's President Peter Mutharika launched his Democratic Progressive Party's manifesto and election campaign on Sunday , ahead of next month's elections where he will seek a second and final term in office.

Last November, Mutharika himself was forced to return a US$200,000 donation from a businessman facing a corruption case in a US$3-million contract to supply food to the Malawi police. But on Sunday he told his supporters:"In 2014, we made promises and kept the promises. Chilima, 48, quit Mutharika's party to form the United Transformation Movement, while staying on as vice president. Under Malawi law, the president cannot fire the vice president.

The party entered into a parliamentary alliance with the president's party after Muluzi came fourth in the 2014 elections.
