ITALY – The thought of going on a cruise typically conjures images of sharing your holiday with a few thousand other people in what is basically a floating hotel.
Every room is a suite serviced by a butler, who will unpack your luggage and bring you champagne and caviar at the drop of a hat. PHOTO: SILVERSEA CRUISES But the contrast is deceiving. Although comparatively small, it is one of the most spacious cruise ships ever built on a gross tonnage-per-passenger basis. In other words, fewer guests but more space for each one.On this ship, every room has its own balcony, and more space has been devoted to plush restaurants, bars and lounges.
And there is an expansive pool deck and an indoor-outdoor restaurant and bar taking full advantage of the balmy Mediterranean sun. But what I am most looking forward to are Silversea’s Sea And Land Taste experiences – a programme of dinners, classes and shore excursions designed to showcase the cuisines of the regions visited.
I know attention to detail is a point of pride for this cruise line, but I am blown away by how far the staff go to accommodate my dietary preferences, especially at this meal. I am fully prepared to de-croute the lamb en croute myself, but he has already prepared a portion for me sans pastry crust, and brings it to the table with a smile.
The guide also steers us off the main tourist route to track down a hard-to-spot Banksy mural in one of the smaller canals, and points out masterpieces by Italian artists Titian and Donatello at the Church of the Frari, a basilica overlooked by many tourists in a rush. Most visitors arrive in Venice by car, bus or train, so it is a treat to be ferried to and from Silver Nova in a small tender boat. Many buildings in the old town of Zadar resemble the set of fantasy series Game Of Thrones.
Under a concrete pier where cruise ships dock, dozens of tubes play tinkling notes as seawater rushes through them, and the gentle, hypnotic music bids you farewell as you leave the town.Salt chef’s table dinners take place in a private kitchen and dining room on deck 10.
