Malaysian police have said the attacker was a “lone wolf” with no connections to JI or other militant groups.

An attacker stormed a police station in Ulu Tiram in Malaysia's Johor state on May 17 with a machete, killing two policemen and injuring a third before being shot dead.

The 55-year-old Malaysian has been combating terrorism since his capture in 2003. He collaborates with the Indonesian National Police, its Detachment 88 counter-terrorism squad, and the National Counter-Terrorism Agency, or BNPT, to deradicalise terrorists and lecture to officials on JI’s operations.

“After the police crackdown on JI in 2001, JI members in the village left one by one. Only a few remained. My sister said the suspect’s family had quietly moved into one of the vacant houses,” he said. “In my view, the suspect seemed to have been radicalised by his own family, possibly influenced by articles and videos on social media and YouTube, and felt a calling to attack,” Mr Nasir added.

The last terror strike for which JI claimed responsibility took place in 2014, with the bombing of the Rizal Park Monument in the Philippines that killed one person and injured seven others. Forming an Islamic state is dangerous as it rejects the existing system of governance, Mr Nasir stressed, adding that the dissemination of such ideology has become “more massive” now than in the past.
