The exercise, running from May 11 to 17, 2021 will be the first large-scale exercise in Japan involving ground troops from Japan, the United States and France. TOKYO: Japan will hold a joint military drill with United States and French troops in the country's southwest next month, the defence minister said on Friday , as China's actions in regional waters raise concern.

"France shares the vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific," Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi told reporters. Paris has strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific where it has territories, including the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean and French Polynesia in the South Pacific.The joint drills will be held at the JGSDF's Kirishima training ground and Camp Ainoura in the Kyushu region and include amphibious operation exercises.

It is particularly concerned by Chinese activity around the Japanese-administered Senkaku islands, which Beijing claims and calls the Diaoyu.Washington has reiterated in recent months that the US-Japan Security Treaty covers the disputed islands.

Japan to open large vaccination centers in Tokyo, Osaka -mediaTOKYO (Reuters) -The Japanese government is planning to open large vaccination centres in Tokyo and Osaka in the coming weeks in a bid to speed up its inoculation drive, local media reported on Sunday. The Nikkei newspaper said on Sunday the government will open a vaccination site in central Tokyo as early as May that will be able to vaccinate around 10,000 people a day. The site will be open to anyone living and working in Tokyo, the paper said, adding that medically trained staff from Japan's Self-Defense Forces will also assist with vaccinations in such centres.
