SINGAPORE — Entrusted with free access to her employers' home, an Indonesian domestic worker decided to exploit that trust and steal more than S$16,000 worth of gold jewellery and cash from them.

Ria Dwi Astuti, 35, then handed the jewellery off to a man, who she met on one of her days off, to sell for cash, only for the man to disappear with the stolen goods.

State Prosecuting Officer Lim Yeow Leong told the court that Ria had “formed the dishonest intent to commit theft” sometime between January and February 2022 — a year after she began to work for Ms Kaur — but the exact date could not be ascertained. As for the stolen foreign cash, the court heard that Ria changed them to Singdollar at a money changer in Bedok.

Speaking to the court through an interpreter, Ria said that she would like to go back to Indonesia as soon as possible to see her mother and take care of her child.
