JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's main rival, Mr Benny Gantz, was elected parliamentary speaker on Thursday in a surprise manoeuvre that could herald a unity government keeping the veteran leader in power.

It follows a year of political deadlock in which a jaded Israeli electorate had voted in three inconclusive elections, with no appetite for a fourth. Mr Yair Lapid, one of Mr Gantz's allies in Blue and White's leadership, chastised the newly-appointed speaker's move. This repeated the pattern of two elections in 2019, with neither Mr Netanyahu nor Mr Gantz able to form a government, so coalition talks were soon underway even though both men had excoriated each other during the election campaigns.
