JAKARTA - Hundreds of Indonesians gathered in several major centres across the archipelago on Thursday as authorities braced for more violent opposition to a major overhaul of the criminal code.

Police shot tear gas into crowds of mostly high school students in the centre of the capital, while a mass of students stormed and occupied the local parliament building in Padang city on Sumatra island. Some were still being held after police found knives and other sharp weapons in their possession, he added.
