Incendios de Maui calcinan zonas turísticas de Hawái y causan al menos seis muertes

KAHULUI, HAWAI, 9 ago : Los incendios forestales avivados por los vientos de un lejano huracán devastaban el miércoles la isla hawaiana de Maui, causando la muerte de al menos seis personas y obligando a turistas y residentes a huir de destinos turísticos que se convertían en llameantes infiernos.

Los detalles oficiales sobre el número de víctimas y los daños en los edificios eran escasos el miércoles, pero los residentes que huían de las llamas, presas del pánico, publicaron vídeos y fotos en las redes sociales en los que se veían nubes de humo apocalípticas sobre playas y palmeras antaño paradisíacas.

Dustin Johnson, de San Diego, estaba en Lahaina, al oeste de Maui, trabajando para una empresa de alquiler de barcos que lleva a los turistas en excursiones de dos horas desde el puerto. El martes por la noche ya habían ardido cientos de hectáreas y se habían cerrado carreteras y escuelas en partes de los condados de Hawái y Maui, según una proclamación de emergencia emitida por la gobernadora en funciones de Hawái, Sylvia Luke. El condado de Hawái abarca la Isla Grande, situada al sur de Maui.
