HONG KONG: A student of a Hong Kong university who fell during protests at the weekend died early on Friday morning , hospital authorities said, setting the stage for a fresh wave of demonstrations in the Chinese-ruled city.

On Tuesday, hospital authorities said the student was in a critical condition. He had apparently fallen from one floor to another in a parking lot during weekend crowd dispersal operations. Protesters have kept up their calls for universal suffrage and an independent inquiry into police behaviour, among other demands.

A screengrab of a video circulating on social media purportedly shows district councillor Andrew Chiu after part of his ear had been bitten off.
