HONG KONG: Hong Kong's top judge on Monday said the city's vaunted judicial independence was"a fact", acknowledging international and local concerns as prosecutions mount under a Chinese-imposed national security law.

Some diplomats, legal scholars and activists are watching developments closely, seeing judicial independence and the rule of law as the bedrock supporting the freedoms and capitalist way of life Hong Kong was promised when Britain handed over its former colony to Chinese rule in 1997.

Hong Kong and Chinese officials say the law was vital to ensure stability after the Asian financial hub was rocked by sometimes-violent protests for much of 2019, and say prosecutions are non political.
