Hongkongers will finally be able to swim at public beaches and pools as well as join bigger religious gatherings, although the government has extended other coronavirus-related social-distancing measures for two more weeks.

Hongkongers will finally be able to swim at public beaches and pools with lifeguard services provided as well as join bigger religious gatherings, the health minister says, although the government has extended other coronavirus-related social-distancing measures for two more weeks.

“After considering the public and health experts’ concerns [over the local cluster], the resumption of classes by May 27 and the time we need for widening coronavirus testing in the community, it is not the right timing to move forward. We do not have enough conditions.” But there was some easing of measures, including allowing religious meetings, of up to 50 per cent of venue capacity, although no drinking or eating would be allowed, except for taking communion.

Public leisure places under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department would be reopened, including 15 public beaches, this Saturday. Gyms, barbecue sites and campsites will be available for use soon, according to Secretary for Home Affairs Caspar Tsui Ying-wai. “Some facilities, such as child facilities and soccer fields are not ready to reopen because of the close contact of the activities.”
