SINGAPORE — From Friday (Dec 17), singles looking to apply for public rental flats will no longer have to find a flatmate first.

Singles who successfully apply for a flat under this new scheme piloted by the Housing and Development Board should be able to move in by the end of January next year, the housing agency said in a media release on Friday.

Under the pilot, instead of having HDB source for a flatmate, a social service agency will be appointed to match singles with a suitable flatmate and manage flat-sharing arrangements. "The flats will come with partitions installed to provide more privacy for the tenants," said HDB."General household furnishings and appliances, such as wardrobes, water heater, washing machine and refrigerator, will also be provided within each flat for tenants’ use."

From sake bars to yacht cabins, Singaporeans remodel no-frills public flatsSingapore's public housing system is acclaimed for providing affordable homes in the land-scarce country where private apartments can cost upwards of S$1 million ($740,800). The Housing Development Board (HDB) flats, in which 80% of Singapore's 5.5 million people live, are typically utilitarian with tight rules governing ownership and resales. Melvyn Yap, a consultant, spent about S$226,000 renovating the ageing home he shares with his mother to create the vibe of a Japanese sake bar complete with a hydraulic table that opens up from a tatami mat-covered seating area where he can sip sake. For decades, Singaporeans have used their HDB flats to make extra cash either by renting them out or re-selling them at a profit.
