BERLIN - Germany reported a jump in coronavirus cases by more than 1,100 to now 6,012 compared to the previous day, the Robert Koch Institute for disease control said on Monday evening.

The decision took Germany a step closer to a total lockdown similar to those implemented in Italy and Spain, where most people have been confined to their homes. The virus is also taking its toll on the economy, Europe's biggest, ending hopes of a first-quarter upswing and weighing heavily on the outlook till at least the third quarter.

Merkel said it was crucial to slow the spread of the virus so that the number of acute cases at one time never exceeded the capacity of Germany's healthcare system to treat them."There is no sense in closing a school and then have the same gathering of children move to the playground instead," she said."We want to avoid having these areas of close contact."

Germany plans numerous measures to strengthen the healthcare system, shield companies and secure jobs and this will impact the federal government's budget plans from 2021-24, according to the letter seen by Reuters. Flagship carrier Lufthansa said it would scrap 90% of long-haul flights and run only a fifth of flights initially planned within Europe.
