GE2020: Government never targeted 10 million population – Heng Swee Keat via yahoosg

SINGAPORE — Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat has refuted allegations by Singapore Democratic Party secretary-general Chee Soon Juan that he had been “toying with the idea” of having a population of 10 million in Singapore.

“Let me be clear: The Government has never proposed or targeted for Singapore to increase its population to 10 million,” he wrote in his post. He had cited a March 2019 dialogue held at the Nanyang Technological University, where Heng had said that Singapore's population density is not excessive. His comments were reported by The Straits Times, although the report neither quoted him as mentioning the figure, nor saying that Singapore should plan for 10 million people.
