Fact box: What's behind the spike in deaths on Mount Everest?

KATHMANDU/KOLKATA - Nine people have died on the Nepalese side of Mount Everest so far this year, the most during a climbing season on the peak since a deadly earthquake in 2015. This time however, climbers and guides are blaming a host of other factors for the spike in deaths:This year, the Nepalese government issued a record 381 permits to climb Everest, costing $11,000 each.

Some operators have urged the government to cut the number of permits, and raise the price to around $20,000 to combat increased crowds. "They got into a situation that was beyond their ability," said Garrett Madison, from US-based Madison Mountaineering, on the experience level of some of those that died. Some trekking companies perform health checks on prospective clients before beginning expeditions, but there is no mandatory requirement to do so.

The Big Read: Calls to ban PMDs mount as accidents persist — but is it the best option?Despite moves in recent years to regulate motorised devices on public paths, calls to beef up action against errant riders are mounting. Then tell us what we pedestrians suppose to do walk on the roads you imbeciles if speeding is the main cause of pmd related accidents , why not mandate a speed limiter device that must be installed or purchased with a new pmd ? if 10km/hr is the speed limit , then the device should automatically cut power once the speed is exceeded . People always say banning is not the best way to go until they themselves encounter a reckless PMD rider that endangers their lives... 🙄
