ARLES, FRANCE - Ukraine's future lies inside the European Union and the country should become a member as soon as possible, the deputy head of the EU Commission said on Friday .
But the country would still need to go through the same membership process as any other candidate, with no fast track route in prospect. In his video address from Kyiv to the EU parliament on March 1, Zelensky had requested"immediate" EU membership, saying his country was"fighting for survival". Europe Minister Clement Beaune described supporting the prospect of EU membership for Ukraine as a"signal, a perspective that in any case will take several years".
