BEIRUT - Druze leader Walid Jumblatt said on Thursday that Iran has gained influence in Lebanon because Arab states have abandoned the country, stepping up criticism of the Iran-backed Hezbollah and

suggesting Tehran wants to erase the Lebanese state.

Stepping up his criticism of Hezbollah, Mr Jumblatt said Lebanon is not a rocket-launching platform, in reference to the powerful arsenal possessed by the group that was founded by Iran's Revolutionary Guards in 1982. An offshoot of Shia Islam, the Druze have long punched above their weight in Lebanon's sectarian politics.

"The difference today between Iran and the Syrian rule ... President Hafez al-Assad did not annul the Lebanese entity ... he did not cancel the entity ... he did not cancel the state," Mr Jumblatt said.
