Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Singapore – one in 13 women will be affected by the disease in their lifetime.

SINGAPORE: Doctors and advocacy groups are calling for more women to go for regular breast cancer screenings and for men to be more aware about the breast health of their loved ones.

With October marked as breast cancer awareness month, non-profit organisation Breast Cancer Foundation and its partners have organised a calendar of activities and initiatives to create awareness on the disease and encourage more women to do regular check-ups. “Many think this is a disease of the elderly and it will not affect them,” Dr Choo, who is also a member of the BCF medical panel at Breast Cancer Foundation, told CNA938’s Asia First on Monday .

“Sometimes, the cancer is diagnosed at stage zero, which means we can pick up cancer even before it becomes invasive. These patients need to just have lumpectomy or mastectomy, they don't have to go to chemotherapy at all.”Women aged between 40 and 49 are typically encouraged to go for a mammogram screening to detect possible breast cancer once a year, with the recommended frequency decreasing to once in two years for women above the age of 50.

Stay open, respect sovereignty, and take collective action: SM Teo on guideposts in a turbulent worldSINGAPORE - Respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all, taking collective action on global issues, and promoting openness and interconnectedness rather than engaging in zero-sum self-interest are some guideposts for Singapore to secure its place in a turbulent and uncertain world, said Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean. Mr Teo, who is also the Coordinating Minister for National Security, added that in this new world, while Singapore’s strategies and solutions may change, these principles that underpin them remain. In the opening address at the Asia Future Summit 2023, Mr Teo said: “Singapore today is better equipped than ever before in terms of human capital, know-how, material resources, and international networks, to play a part in nudging the world in the direction of openness, inclusivity, and enlightened self-interest, both for our own benefit, and also for the region, and the world as a whole.” The summit marks the inaugural collaboration between The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao and The Business Times. The invitation-only event is taking place today and tomorrow at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. Read more at straitstimes.com.
