A set of camping gear – including essentials like a tent, chair, sleeping bag and lamp – can cost less than $300.

With the allure of accessibility and affordability, more Singaporeans are driving across the Causeway with a trunk full of camping essentials, ready to spend the night in their mobile bedrooms away from the bustling city.

“In Singapore, it’s almost impossible to camp in your car, so we only meet in open carparks at places like Kallang or East Coast Park. Overseas, there are plenty of campsites that allow cars to park overnight,” she says. Camping in Singapore comes with conditions, such as applying for a free permit at least two weeks in advance and pitching tents only in designated areas. Each permit is for one tent and up to six people, and campers are limited to four camping days a month.

She says: “We pack all our camping gear into our vehicles. Some of our set-ups – like opening the awnings attached to our cars and unpacking chairs or ice boxes – take less than 20 minutes.” A car-camping event at Sarimbun Scout Camp in Singapore in May 2022, organised by Kingpin Productions.
