China has started building a laboratory deep underground in the Gobi Desert to assess whether it would be a suitable location for a nuclear waste dump, amid moves to expand its nuclear power capacity. The Beishan Underground Research Laboratory in the northwestern province of Gansu will be used to research long-term storage of high-level radioactive waste.
Hong Kong residents will be able to see rock samples China collected from the moon last year, when an exhibition showcasing the nation’s space programme opens in the city this weekend. The lunar debris has arrived along with a delegation of six top Chinese space engineers and designers, who launched a four-day visit to Hong Kong on Wednesday.
