JAKARTA - Doctor Berkatnu Indrawan Janguk had been determined to become an internist and planned to continue his study at the end of this year. But, his dream would not come true.

Dr Berkatnu is one of 105 Indonesian doctors who have lost their battles against the Covid-19. At least 71 nurses have also died because of the deadly virus, according to the National Nurses Association of Indonesia. "It's important to manage working hours and assign a number of hospitals to specifically handle Covid-19 patients as that will reduce the exposure to all health workers," he told ST.

Dr Tri Maharani, the head of emergency unit at Daha Husada hospital in Kediri, East Java, agreed with Dr Sutrino, saying that unlike ordinary people, doctors have a more intense exposure to people with the disease, posing them to a bigger risk of infection. She called for hospitals to prioritise safety of health workers, such as by providing negative pressure or high-efficiency particulate air filter at emergency units.
