Thanks to COVID-19, the circuit breaker has put a dampener on my gym regime for the near future.
Like many gym goers I suspect, I would visit the gym partly because I was committed to “self-optimisation”. I wanted to perfect the ultimate “fitspo” lifestyle and become the proverbial woman who “has it all”. Convinced this obsessive practice was only making me fitter, leaner, toner, and ultimately the much better person I aspired to be, I continued hacking away like a maniacal energizer bunny.
Workism in American society, according to The Atlantic, is “the belief that work is not only necessary to economic production, but also the centerpiece of one’s identity and life’s purpose”. Along the same vein, presenteeism in the Singaporean workplace regards employees working till 11pm as hardworking models worth emulating. When it comes to physical fitness, this culture of hyperproductivity translates into extreme image consciousness.
Yes negative peer pressure can make any culture toxic - a driving factor of the beauty industry. Glad we're making progress at embracing diversity & staying healthy while keeping a low carbon footprint. There are inclusive & body positive gyms ard. Would love CrunchGym in SG!
1. Are you asking everyone to change to suit you? 2. You have a choice not to join the classes. 3. You can cancel your membership.
Just mind your own business and let the toxic members by toxic by themselves😏
Seems more a criticism of fitness classes and studios rather than gyms in general. Author's perception of the gym seems fuelled by peer pressure, and does raise some questions about where she has placed blame on. Dear author, maybe it's time you consider your own control instead.
Youtube is full of people who are unqualified to give fitness/workout advice despite having a massive following *cough* chloe ting. So you need to do your research first. I suggest you find better sources for workouts e.g. trainer2thepros. so many workout and educational videos.
I also wouldn't want to call working out torture. Sure, workouts may be uncomfortable or tiring sometimes but it should not be painful or feel torturous. You're probably doing something wrong if you do feel that way.
While there are some things about 'gym culture' that needs to go away, such as being judged for not turning up for workouts, there's nothing wrong with people looking out for your form. In fact, you should be called out if your form is not proper, to prevent injury.
I miss gym
Just get a cheap decathlon kettlebell & do workouts at home. No need for gyms.
More people waiting to be able to dine in at hawker centres and foodcourts instead of opening the gyms.
Just go to Planet Fitness
