The weekend “panic buying” sparked by the novel coronavirus and the raising of the DORSCON reflects Singaporeans' state of preparedness and ...

SINGAPORE: A new face of the novel coronavirus has emerged on social media – that of a masked Singaporean aunty absconding with vast amounts of toilet paper and instant noodles.

Vocal netizens guffawed in agreement. A viral video of an aunty with a bomb shelter stockpiled with “goodies” like a “minimart” started circulating. After all, orange is just one level away from red, and the drivers among us suspect it might not take long for us to get there, so we best to be ready. However, for most people, “stocking up” is not “hoarding”. Buying an extra sack of rice and some canned food is also quite a common response in times of crisis, and practised around the world. At the peak of the grocery crisis, an acquaintance pre-emptively posted on Facebook: “Saturday is my regular day for buying groceries for the entire family. If you see me on social media or in person with a whole cartload of groceries, please do not un-friend me.”This struck a chord with me.

How is there no shame? Only thinking of yourselves and clearing things out, what about others? You should change cna to cba because I guess you guys just can’t be arsed anymore

Ofc it was written by a Chinese 🤡🤡🤡

All's social media fault

No shame?

I’m Singaporean. I think buying much more than what u n ur family need is kiasu n selfish. We calmly went to the supermart to pick up a few things then when we saw the craziness n lines we also panicked! But we left with just one basket of items. I still stare at the empty...

More like Annie how. Pffft

Professional, journalist, editor, writer, whatever you call herself. The article is derogative. That’s only an understatement

Yes there is. Periodt.

This kiasu behaviour is a national embarrassment. The audacity to say no shame, what a clown.

Trying to justify the actions of hoarding?

Why is it so shameful to prepare? If a family of 4or 5 ends up quarantined for 14 days or more they may very well need a lot of toilet paper or noodles. The people with heaped trolleys might be shopping for their immediate family and extended family. Don’t be quick to judge

Are you okay? Are you okay? Are you okay Annie?

If your wife requests, better go and grab some for good. The most important thing: don't stock much more than what you may use. But the social networks continue to pump news and pics of rush for noodles and toilet paper in HK. Now it's time to have some sympathetic attitude to CN

Disgraceful article

You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to glorify what is obviously shameful and unnecessary behaviour. These people were clearly thinking of themselves first and not the broader society and it’s ludicrous to suggest otherwise.

Kiasus justifying being kiasu

No need to demonize common Singaporeans as they are mostly just trying to be prepared to ride out the crises, let’s not follow slavishly the foreign media to sneer or smear our fellow citizens.

Dorscon should be Don’t Over React Singaporean Can Or Not.

There is no excuse for any and whatever reason for that type of action.

Was about to slam the headline as 'always 1 or 2 who wants to be different' but after reading, Annie does offer a different prospective to the situation. Guess we just have to learn how to hoard gracefully.

Unless you lock yourself up in your HDB or condo unit and don’t come out for the next 30 days, I can’t understand why hoard 😒

🤦🏾‍♂️
