GENEVA: European clubs are looking at new options for the future of the Champions League after a proposal that would have given captive places to 24 teams ran into strong opposition, sources with knowledge of the matter said on Monday.

The top tier would be the new version of the Champions League but 24 of the 32 teams would keep their places for the following season, breaking the tradition that qualification is achieved through performance in domestic competition. However, FC Copenhagen proposed that historical records of the clubs should also be taken into account - which would favour big clubs from middle-ranking leagues over smaller clubs from top-ranked leagues.
