To help contain the epidemic, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has sent more than 10,000 medical personnel to Wuhan and other hard-hit areas in Hubei province.

The world’s biggest military has been forced to suspend all large-scale joint drills, with the coronavirus epidemic disrupting transport and allocations of military resources around the country.

The defence ministry said the military was now focused on the battle against the epidemic, forcing the PLA to suspend some of its “large-scale drills and training plans”. “Troops in different theatre commands were also needed to help local hospitals and governments cope with the widespread epidemic.” The coronavirus has infected more than 80,000 people in mainland China, killing nearly 3,000. More than 80 per cent of the total confirmed cases have been in Hubei province, a hub for railways and highways connecting the Southern and Eastern theatre commands to the PLA’s Zhurihe Combined Tactics Training Base in Inner Mongolia.
