EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell urged member states to maintain collective discipline as China sought to take advantage of their different views on diplomacy.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief has accused China of trying to exploit differences of opinion among the bloc’s 27 member states for its own ends, while promoting a unique version of multilateralism.

As Beijing has sought to repair the damage caused to its international image by the health crisis that started on its soil, the EU has criticised Chinese officials for their propaganda and disinformation campaigns aimed at a European audience. “But surely it is up to us Europeans to maintain the necessary collective discipline. Unity is a precondition for influence, since not even the biggest member state acting alone can influence a superpower.”

“The key point is that we should all demonstrate mutual support and international solidarity – and the European Union has always proven how strong its commitment is – while avoiding the politicisation of emergency medical assistance,” he said. Xi praised Orban’s leadership in tackling the coronavirus outbreak, despite the prime minister facing criticism at home for introducing an emergency law in March as part of the nation’s containment efforts.

“Both the EU and China often state their commitment to promoting multilateralism and the UN system … But we also need to acknowledge that our approaches on multilateralism differ,” he said.
