China says remnants of Long March rocket landed in Indian Ocean

BEIJING: Remnants of China's biggest rocket landed in the Indian Ocean on Sunday , with the bulk of its components destroyed upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, according to Chinese state media, ending days of speculation over where the debris would hit.

With most of the Earth's surface covered by water, the odds of populated area on land being hit had been low, and the likelihood of injuries even lower, according to experts. But uncertainty over the rocket's orbital decay and China's failure to issue stronger reassurances in the run-up to the re-entry fuelled anxiety.

Ever since large chunks of the NASA space station Skylab fell from orbit in July 1979 and landed in Australia, most countries have sought to avoid such uncontrolled re-entries through their spacecraft design, McDowell said. The Long March launched last week was the second deployment of the 5B variant since its maiden flight in May 2020. Last year, debris from another Long March rocket fell on villages in the Ivory Coast, causing structural damage but no injuries or deaths.

China 'wins gamble' after space rocket debris crash lands in Indian OceanRemnants of a Chinese rocket crashed into the Indian Ocean on Sunday in one of the largest uncontrolled re-entries of a spacecraft in history. No one is believed to have been injured, but the incident prompted NASA to criticise China for “failing to meet responsible standards regarding their space debris” and a lack of transparency. People in Jordan, Oman and Saudi Arabia reported spotting the debris in the dawn skies, which crashed into the ocean at 0224 GMT near the Maldives, according to coordinates reported by Chinese state media. China’s space agency said that most of the core section of its Long March 5B rocket burned up on re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. The news ended days of speculation about where debris from the rocket's core section, which was 30 metres long and 21 tonnes heavy, would land. Chinese state media had dismissed worries that the rocket was out of control and could cause damage as “Western hype”.

Scientists have recommended that one version of the variant first found in India, known as B.1.617.2, is designated a 'variant of concern', the BBC said, adding more than 500 cases of the variant had been recorded, up from 202 last week. Public Health England (PHE), which postponed publication of its weekly data on variants on Thursday, had no immediate comment on the report.
