BEIJING – China said on Monday that an employee of Japanese company Astellas Pharma was detained for allegedly spying, even as Japan sought to have him released.

Ms Mao said there were many similar cases in recent years, and that Japan needed to do more to ask its citizens not to spy on Chinese companies and China in general. Japanese government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters that Tokyo’s embassy in Beijing was informed “this month that a Japanese man in his 50s was detained in Beijing for breaking China’s domestic laws”.“Ever since we learnt about this case, the Japanese government has been strongly urging the immediate release of this Japanese national,” Mr Matsuno said.More than a dozen Japanese nationals have been detained in China since 2015, according to Kyodo News and other Japanese media outlets.
