LONDON – China’s controversial plan to build a new embassy near the Tower of London in Britain was rejected in a British council meeting on Thursday evening.

China originally bought the site for £255 million in May 2018, with the view of replacing its current embassy in the Marylebone neighbourhood. Tower Hamlets Council has received 51 written complaints, according to a document published before the meeting, with concern among residents that the area will become a target for terrorists and a camera surveillance hotspot.
