'I do...?' China offers pre-marriage counselling to slow divorce rate

BEIJING - China is offering state-sponsored marriage counselling to couples before they tie the knot in an attempt to slow rising divorce rates.

Last year, 4.15 million Chinese couples untied the knot, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs - up from 1.3 million in 2003, when couples were first allowed to divorce by mutual consent without going to court. It is not clear whether it is mandatory for all couples to seek counselling before getting married, or who would pay for it.

The new guidelines also want to make the marriage registration process more"solemn and serious". Currently city hall marriages can take just minutes.
