LONDON - China has betrayed the people of Hong Kong so the West should stop kowtowing to Beijing for an illusory great pot of gold, said Mr Chris Patten, the last governor of the former British colony.
"The Hong Kong people have been betrayed by China," Mr Patten was quoted as saying by The Times newspaper."What we are seeing is a new Chinese dictatorship," Mr Patten said. "We should stop being fooled that somehow at the end of the all the kowtowing there's this great pot of gold waiting for us. It's always been an illusion."

It is time for him to shut up! Causing discord to Hongkong is wrong of Chris Patten's part, he had made more than enough from that colony of Britain! Look at SIN, without late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew and group, Singapore will not be what SIN is today!
Chris Patten is very, very political! History, the British took Hongkong (China's fishing village) when China was cut up in pieces and it is time that the Hongkongers realise that they are Chinese and should understand that Britain had done a lot of harm to all it's colonies!
Says the man who was once humiliated by Lee Kuan Yew. Stop shedding crocodile tears. If the Brits really cared for the HK'ers, you would have given them full democracy way before '97. The locals have always been treated as 2nd class citizens.
China reclaimed a land leased for 99 years to the UK. It is very clear that this is China territory and it was clear that things change when UK leave and China takes over. ThereisNo surprise here and NO need for UK to take any further action.

I have visited Hong Kong under both British & Chinese rule. Hong Kong was always going to return to the motherland eventually. (Not this early though.) I can see how the protestors have hurt the Hong Kong economy though regardless of their plea for democracy. Peace 4 all please.

China never betray Hong Kong. It is you as the last colonial governor who had not given HKG the democracy they are asking for. HKG is China’s territory. National security is a must before the protestors supported by UK and US destroy the territory for your selfish reasons
