China's expanding military presence in the region has worried several of its neighbours. BEIJING: Beijing recently conducted"high-intensity" naval exercises in the South China Sea, China's defence ministry said Thursday , as tensions grow over the Asian power's manoeuvres in the contested waters.

Ren said the exercises were part of routine training and had"achieved the expected results", without giving their specific location.
