Matt Fitzpatrick celebrated his 29th birthday by storming into the lead following the European Masters second round at Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland on Friday, boosting his chances of claiming a place in the European Ryder Cup team.

"Front nine I didn't give myself too many chances, a little bit scrappy. A couple of pins that didn't feel like they suited me," said Fitzpatrick, who won the European Masters in 2017 and 2018. Overnight leader Yannik Paul of Germany lost his lead after shooting one-over par on the day to stand at five-under.
