Wednesday's designation appears to be an acknowledgment that it will take years for Afghan evacuees to gain permanent residency through the clogged US immigration system.
"We are worried that this designation announcement will be conflated with an Afghan Adjustment Act, and people will feel like that is no longer needed," said Ms Naomi Steinberg, vice-president for policy and advocacy at HIAS, a non-profit organisation that has been helping Afghans resettle in the United States.
The temporary status is intended for people from countries that have suffered through natural disasters or other urgent situations, allowing them to live and work in the United States for a specific period, which is often extended.
