The White House tries to downplay the remarks made by the US President at a fund-raising event.

US President Joe Biden hosting Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the White House in the US in April 2024.

“Why is China stalling so badly economically? Why is Japan in trouble? Why is Russia in trouble? And India? Because they’re xenophobic. They don’t want immigrants,” Mr Biden said on May 1, with a transcript not made public until May 2. Such events are neither filmed nor recorded, but a small number of journalists attend them and provide a written account.

While China and Russia are considered US rivals, Mr Biden’s remarks on Japan and India came as a surprise.
