SYDNEY: China needs to lift its sanctions on Australia to improve relations, Australia's prime minister said on Tuesday (Jun 14), as he welcomed as 'a good thing' the first talks between ministers from

China is Australia's largest trading partner and the biggest customer for its iron ore - its largest export earner - but diplomatic relations have been strained in recent years.

"It is China that has imposed sanctions on Australia. They need to remove those sanctions in order to improve relations," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters in Brisbane. But Australia's defence minister, Richard Marles, met his Chinese counterpart, Wei Fenghe, on the sidelines of a security conference in Singapore on Sunday, with Marles describing their hour-long talk as an"important first step".
