SYDNEY – Australia is a large car-driving nation, yet the uptake of electric vehicles has remained surprisingly low.

Such standards, which apply in almost every developed economy except Australia and Russia, effectively force manufacturers to sell large numbers of EVs and other low-emission cars. “Without competitive standards, Australia will remain a destination for higher-emitting vehicles, leaving consumers with limited choice and higher running costs over the lifespan of their vehicles,” the report found.

Some analysts criticised the delay, saying the government could have based the standard on existing measures in other countries. “This should have happened years ago,” he noted. “We want ambitious standards, but we want standards that are realistic, we want standards that are achievable.”Some analysts said Australia also needs to adopt a national timeframe for phasing out petrol or diesel cars.
