The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) said it had approved Pfizer's vaccine for use as a booster in youths aged 16-17, joining the United States, Israel and Britain. New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet said the state's health system was"currently operating within capacity" against the Omicron-fuelled outbreak. Australia is among the most heavily vaccinated countries against Covid-19 with more than 93 per cent of its adult population double-dosed and some 35 per cent of people above 18 having received a booster dose, according to official data. The capital has found a total of 55 local cases with symptoms since Jan 15, the data shows. It began administering vaccines to children aged 5-11 from early this month. While the Omicron variant is considered a milder strain, the sheer number of cases has put enormous pressure on hospitals, leading to staff shortages. TGA said the country's vaccination advisory group will soon give more information on when the 16-17 age group will be eligible to receive their booster doses. Under MOH's new approach of presenting infection numbers, the daily case count includes the number of Protocol 2 cases — those who are well or assessed to have a mild condition.

A total of 3,402 deaths have been registered in the country since the pandemic began, far lower than numbers seen in many comparable countries. Australia's daily new cases have dropped to around 46,000, well down from a peak of around 150,000 two weeks ago. Australia reported fewer Covid-19 deaths on Thursday, a day after recording a pandemic high of 87 deaths, while hospital cases remained steady, raising hopes the country's worst outbreak may have peaked.
