In my professional opinion as a senior consultant psychiatrist with substantial experience in working with members of this community, this is an unqualified and irresponsible comment by a non-mental health professional. An over-simplistic attribution of suicide/self-harm to a single cause of the experience of being discriminated or rejected for identifying as LGBTQ only has the unnecessary and immensely unhelpful effect of the casting of blame and/or inducing guilt in stakeholders involved in LGBTQ issues, regardless of the views they uphold.
I believe that all who attended the dialogue, and perhaps even more people out there, seek common ground in order to lower the suicide rates in the LGBTQ community.
Imagine if you were a jeweler, but you only ever made flat cut pieces. No real dimension to it. Except you called them by the names of other cuts. This is that, but journalism. Shit-tier work.
The entire point here seems to be setting up a straw man and demeaning the suffering caused by discrimination. Which is, shall we say, Not A Good Look™️.

Simplistic take. Discrimination causes anxiety, fear, shame, etc. People self medicate to deal with these things. And the LGBTQ community has never said that removing discrimination will fix everything, but it sure as hell fixes a lot!
This article is very poorly written, here's the synopsis: the writer says LGBT suicide rates aren't solely because of discrimination, writer offers no alternative to why. They only say 'I'm a psychiatrist, trust me' while offering no other solution to why LGBT suicide is high

As a practicing psychiatrist myself, I rubuke the author of this garbage. Co-morbid substance abuse and mental health issues are just as attributable to the discrimination young LGBT people face as is suicide. They are not extraneous issues.
