The shadowy game has begun to take a more violent turn.

PARIS – Laurent Vinatier is a French academic who knows Russia well. The 47-year-old has spent more than a decade visiting the country, often in the service of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, a non-governmental organisation that works in cooperation with the United Nations on discreet informal diplomacy and conflict mediation.

The French authorities have no doubts that Vinatier is the latest unwitting victim in a fierce cloak-and-dagger confrontation between Russian and Western intelligence services that is unfolding against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine. In recent media interviews, Mr Putin appeared to confirm that he is seeking the release of “the patriot Krasikov” in exchange for Gershkovich.

A spate of mystery fires and attacks on infrastructure in the Baltic states of northern Europe, as well as in Germany and Britain, are being blamed on agents of the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence.
