BRATISLAVA: Slovaks voted on Saturday in round one of a presidential election that a vocal government critic appears poised to win after an investigative journalist's murder dealt a blow to the ruling elite.

Journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee were gunned down in February 2018, just as he was to publish a story on alleged ties between Slovak politicians and the Italian mafia plus associated irregularities in EU farm subsidy payments. Slovak entrepreneur Marian Kocner was charged this week with ordering the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak, whose killing triggered mass protests that toppled prime minister Robert Fico.

Economist Katarina, 42, also voted for Caputova, telling AFP that"she will ensure equality and fairness. She is honest and sympathetic." Campaigning on the slogan"Always for Slovakia", Sefcovic has promised greater social benefits for the elderly and young families.
