"When I last saw my mother, it felt like a normal visit in unusual circumstances," said Nicole, who declined to give her family name and whose account Reuters was unable to independently verify. "I could never have imagined that I wouldn't be able to call and ask them how they are doing." More than 300 civilians were evacuated from Mariupol and other areas in southern Ukraine as part of a joint United Nations -Red Cross operation that concluded on Wednesday.
