Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge must demolish security gates and fencing at his £3 million home after losing a planning appeal. The structures were deemed 'unacceptable' on Green Belt land, despite his claims of needing protection from unwanted visitors.

Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has lost a long-running legal battle over the security gates and fencing installed at his £3 million riverside home in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

The 52-year-old Michelin-starred chef and his wife, sculptor Beth Cullen-Kerridge, had installed towering black gates and two-meter-tall fencing to protect their privacy and ensure the safety of their 11-year-old son. However, the local council ruled that the structures required planning permission and were not in keeping with the character of the affluent, tranquil neighborhood.

Despite Kerridge’s arguments that the security measures were necessary due to unwanted visitors and intimidating behavior, an independent planning appeal upheld the council’s enforcement notices, ordering the demolition of the gates, fencing, and a timber carport within two months. The dispute began in 2020 when the couple made significant changes to the entrance of their architect-designed property without prior approval. Retrospective planning permission was later sought but withdrawn following complaints from neighbors.

One neighbor, Kathryn Durrant, objected to the development, stating that the structures were excessively large, poorly built, and disrupted the area’s aesthetic. She also claimed the carport and gates made navigating the narrow lane more difficult, forcing large vehicles into her driveway. Local councillor Mandy Brar echoed these concerns, arguing that the development harmed the riverside views and the character of the exclusive Thames-side location.

Council officials at Windsor and Maidenhead took enforcement action in 2023, describing the fencing and gates as 'alien' and 'unsympathetic' to the Green Belt land. They also criticized the carport as being 'excessive in size' and 'out of keeping' with the surroundings. During the appeal, Kerridge and his wife maintained that the security measures were essential due to past incidents of trespassing and intimidation.

They argued that smaller fences would not provide adequate protection, as they could be easily climbed over. However, Planning Inspector Robin Buchanan acknowledged their concerns about public attention but ruled that these did not justify the planning harm caused by the structures. Buchanan noted that while the couple faced 'unwelcome public attention,' the development’s impact on the Green Belt and the area’s character outweighed their security needs.

Kerridge now faces a tight deadline to dismantle the contested structures, marking a significant setback in his efforts to secure his family’s privacy
