A loyal Morrisons manager was sacked after trying to stop a violent repeat offender who had over 100 prior offenses, raising questions about corporate retail safety policies.
A veteran Morrisons store manager, Sean Egan , has been terminated from his position after nearly three decades of service following an altercation with a notorious shoplifter. Mr. Egan, a 46-year-old father, had been a dedicated employee for 29 years, known for turning underperforming locations into profitable assets. The incident occurred at an Aldridge, Walsall branch last December when Egan attempted to prevent Daniel Kendall, a 36-year-old career criminal, from stealing alcohol.
Despite company policies mandating a deter-and-not-detain approach, Egan found himself in a volatile situation when Kendall became aggressive and began spitting at him. Reacting to the assault rather than just the theft, Egan attempted to restrain the offender to protect staff and customers. Following a disciplinary hearing, the supermarket giant dismissed the manager, citing his failure to strictly adhere to corporate safety protocols. Expressing his devastation on LinkedIn, Mr. Egan described the loss of his job as an identity crisis, noting that he had joined the company at age 17. The dismissal, which occurred just three weeks before Christmas, left him struggling to explain the situation to his children. He emphasized that his decision to engage was a human reaction to being assaulted, not a calculated management maneuver. His story has since resonated with many retail workers across the country who feel ignored by corporate entities regarding the rise of aggressive shoplifting. Egan remains determined to advocate for employees who face similar threats, highlighting the growing frustration among staff members who often feel unprotected while performing their duties in increasingly hostile retail environments. Further investigation into the background of the shoplifter, Daniel Kendall, reveals a long history of criminal behavior with over 100 documented offenses and at least 40 prior convictions. His rap sheet includes various thefts, such as stealing high-value goods from other local retailers and cash from ATMs. Notably, Kendall was previously jailed in 2018 for a brazen attempt to break into a police officer's residence. During that incident, he was apprehended by the off-duty officer and a brave neighbor. The fact that such a prolific offender was the catalyst for the end of a 29-year career has sparked significant public outrage. While Morrisons maintains its internal policies are in place to ensure safety, the case has ignited a wider debate regarding whether retailers are doing enough to support long-standing, loyal employees who are forced to make split-second decisions when faced with dangerous, recidivist criminals in the workplace
