Sananda Fru Lands at New Program After Louisville Transfer

Louisville forward Sananda Fru, who led the team in rebounds and blocks and ranked second nationally in two-point field goal percentage, has announced his transfer destination. Fru is the second of four Cardinals to commit to a new school, as Louisville navigates significant offseason roster turnover.

Sananda Fru , a prominent forward from the Louisville men's basketball program, has reportedly finalized his transfer destination. Fru was the first player from the Cardinals' roster to announce his intention to enter the transfer portal this offseason. He is the second of the four Louisville players from this transfer cycle to commit to a new collegiate program.

Fellow teammates Khani Rooths has already committed to play for Oklahoma, while Mouhamed Camara and Vangelis Zougris have not yet revealed their next academic and athletic affiliations.

During his tenure with Louisville, Fru demonstrated significant impact, participating in all 35 games played by the team. He concluded the season as the Cardinals' fifth-highest scorer, averaging 9.0 points per contest. Furthermore, Fru led the team in both rebounds and blocks, with averages of 6.1 boards and 1.4 rejections per game. His remarkable efficiency from two-point range was particularly noteworthy, boasting a 76.5 field goal percentage. This statistic not only topped the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) but also ranked second nationally among all NCAA Division I basketball programs.

However, a closer examination of his performance reveals a slight decline in overall efficiency during the latter part of the season. Over the final 11 games, Fru's scoring and rebounding averages dipped to 5.9 points and 5.2 rebounds, a noticeable contrast to his earlier performance of 10.6 points and 6.6 rebounds across the first 23 games. This shift in production led to a strategic adjustment by the coaching staff, with Fru being moved to a reserve role for the last six games of the season, making way for Vangelis Zougris in the starting lineup.

Head Coach Pat Kelsey addressed Fru's role change prior to Louisville's home finale against Syracuse, the first game where Fru came off the bench. Kelsey emphasized that Fru's transition was not a reflection of any wrongdoing on his part, stating that Fru is a highly valued team player. He recounted a conversation with Fru where, upon learning he would be starting Zougris, Fru responded with understanding and a commitment to remain ready, highlighting his exceptional team-first attitude and the overarching strength of the team unit.

Louisville's offseason has been characterized by substantial roster changes, extending beyond player departures via the transfer portal. Several key players have exhausted their collegiate eligibility, including Ryan Conwell, J'Vonne Hadley, Aly Khalifa, Isaac McKneely, and Kobe Rodgers. Additionally, Mikel Brown Jr. has declared for the NBA Draft. As a result, the Cardinals are slated to return only Adrian Wooley and London Johnson from the previous season’s roster.

Despite these departures, Louisville has been actively recruiting from the transfer portal, securing commitments from highly touted prospects. Kansas forward Flory Bidunga, Oregon point guard Jackson Shelstad, and Arkansas forward Karter Knox have all recently committed to join the Cardinals.

Following a highly successful inaugural season under Coach Kelsey, which saw the team achieve legitimate preseason Final Four aspirations and reach as high as No. 6 in national rankings, year two proved to be a more challenging and ultimately disappointing campaign. The Cardinals concluded the season with a 24-11 overall record. They managed to secure their first NCAA Tournament victory since 2017 by defeating USF in the first round, but their tournament run was cut short in the subsequent round by Michigan State.
