Medina County is one of the fastest-growing areas around San Antonio and with the dramatic spike in people moving to the area, there have been some traffic issues. Medina County is asking the Texas Department of Transportation to be added the same road network as San Antonio to ease some of that congestion. Medina County is going through the application process with TxDOT to become part of the Alamo Metropolitan Planning Organization. That would give Medina County access to money set aside to support the growth and infrastructure in and around Bexar County. “You can see that the city of San Antonio actually reaches into the northeast portion of Medina County,” said Jessica Castiglione, Medina County, Precinct 1 Commissioner. Castiglione said the growth of San Antonio is bleeding into Medina County and the proximity should be one of the reasons for TxDOT to add Medina County to the Alamo area road system. Once TxDOT approves the request, Medina County can get in line for state road updates within the county. “Medina County is actually going to have to compete with the Bexar County projects and also Guadalupe County and Comal County and then Kendall County is also part of the MPO,” said Castiglione. Medina County Commissioners told us having access to that money won’t only help expand existing roads, it’ll help plan for the future and add additional roads to serve the growing population. “Through Commissioner’s Court already, we have already okayed 15,500 homes. Most of them once they kick off, are 15-year build-outs,” said Larry Sittre, Medina County Precinct 2 Commissioner. Sittre said there is no end in sight for Medina County’s growth. According to Sittre and Castiglione, many people commute between Medina County and San Antonio and this change would help make that commute easier. “It’s about taking the metropolitan region and identifying projects that are needed to support the region as a whole,” said Castiglione.
